Microvascular Reconstruction: Anatomy, Applications and Surgical Technique (PDF Book)
By Ralph T. Manktelow, Ken Finch, G. Ian Taylor, Ronald M. Zuker
Reconstructive microvascular surgery has become more mature, and its development has defied early skepticism. Despite initially skepticism, visionary individuals recognized the potential of the field of visioning. They either supported or participated in its development. While the initial focus was on the replanting of amputated parts, the concept of free tissue transfer to other sites was the true catalyst for microsurgery to become more widely known. Since its humble start, microsurgery has experienced a significant evolution, surpassing traditional methods of reconstruction and making significant advances in the field of plastic surgery.
Early on, the variety of available procedures was limited, which led to a patient problem that could be solved by an available procedure. This approach was often unsuccessful. Troubles were had with the utilization of flaps like the groin flap and the deltopectoral flap, these flaps presented technical issues including vascular irregularities, short pedicles, and small vessels. Frequent occurrences of surgical procedures that were protracted and the occurrence of vascular thrombosis were noted, these events disrupt the typical hospital schedule and have led to questions about the legitimacy of these new techniques.
However, over the past decade, the field of microvascular surgery has experienced a significant evolution. Advances in technology, surgical expertise, and an increased understanding of vascular anatomy have all contributed to significant advances. The outcomes of surgical procedures have been increased, the complications have been reduced, and the effectiveness of these methods is now recognized.
These significant advances in microvascular surgery have had a significant impact on patient care. Now, surgeons have access to innovative methods and advanced surgical procedures, this leads to increased efficacy and patient satisfaction. The field continues to progress, and ongoing research and dedicated collaborations have the potential to lead to additional advances in the future.
